Growing up in Hayward, Wisconsin, the Lumberjack World Championships were a key part of our summer culture. Beyond the lake days, the cookouts, and the hiking trails, this event was one of the things I looked forward to most. The excitement in the air, the incredible athleticism, and the sense of pride in our town’s traditions made it something special.
Fast forward to this summer, and I had the opportunity to be part of the action in a way I never imagined – capturing the event as a photographer and social media influencer. What started as a local summer staple became a full-circle moment, as I transitioned from spectator to the one behind the lens, documenting the intensity and thrill of this world-class event.

Brief History of Logging in Hayward and Timber Sports
These championships aren’t just about competition, they’re about celebrating the area’s history. Hayward has a rich logging past, dating back to the late 1800s when the Northwoods were bustling with lumber camps. Loggers worked grueling days felling trees, using nothing but axes and crosscut saws, and then floated massive logs down rivers to sawmills. What started as a way of life eventually evolved into a competitive sport, as lumberjacks tested their skills against one another in chopping, sawing, and log-rolling contests. Over time, those contests grew into what we now know as timber sports, and Hayward became home to one of the most prestigious competitions in the world.
From Fan to Photographer
Photographing and covering the 2024 Lumberjack World Championships was an incredible experience and was so meaningful for me. Not only was I able to witness some of the best athletes in the world competing, but I got to capture their raw power and determination – something that has always been a part of Hayward’s DNA. From speed climbers flying up towering poles to competitors racing across floating logs in the boom run, it was everything I loved about these sports but seen through my camera lens.
My Favorite Disciplines to Capture
While every event at the Lumberjack World Championships is exciting, there are two in particular that stand out as my favorites to photograph:

Speed Climbing: The speed climbing event is one of the most adrenaline-packed to watch. Athletes scale 60- and 90-foot poles in seconds, racing against their opponent and the clock. The energy of the crowd, the power in the climber’s movements, and that dramatic moment when they reach the top and descend back to the ground – capturing that pure intensity was something truly special.

Boom Run: The boom run is nothing short of chaotic in the best way possible. Competitors race across floating logs at full speed, trying to make it to the other side without falling into the water below. It’s one of the most exciting events to photograph because of how unpredictable and fast-paced it is. Every step feels like a gamble, and it’s a rush to freeze those moments when athletes are balancing on the edge.
Structure of This Year’s Event

This year’s Lumberjack World Championships had an unforgettable lineup. The excitement kicked off on Wednesday with a comedy show by Charlie Berens, setting the perfect tone for the weekend ahead. Thursday’s events got the competition rolling, leading into a jam-packed Friday filled with high-energy disciplines. But Saturday’s what should have been the climactic championship day took an unexpected turn when severe weather forced a major delay in the competition. Despite the setback, the spirit of the event didn’t falter. Sunday became a unique and special day, as athletes stayed in town to finish competing, and LWC opened the gates for free, allowing locals and visitors alike to witness the final events. It was a rare, intimate moment that showcased the heart of both the competitors and the community, just another reason why this event is so special to Hayward.
Collaborating with Local Talent
One of the biggest personal highlights for me this year was getting to work alongside two incredible local photographers, Dalton Hessel of The Northern Nerd and Kelly Randolph of Once in a Blue Moon Photography. The three of us, all from this area, were able to capture the event in our own unique ways, telling the story through different perspectives. It was an honor to share this experience with them, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have collaborated with such talented individuals who are just as passionate about documenting our community as I am.
A Full-Circle Moment
Being there as a photographer felt like a dream come true. As a local, I had always admired these athletes from the stands. To now be the one capturing their moments of triumph, struggle, and everything in between was a reminder of how far I’ve come and how much this community and its traditions have shaped me. The Lumberjack World Championships are a huge part of Hayward’s identity, and getting the chance to contribute to telling that story was something I’ll always cherish. These championships aren’t just a competition, they’re a celebration of community, culture, and dedication. They bring together locals and visitors alike to honor the spirit of outdoor sports and tradition. Being a part of it this year was an experience I’ll never forget, and I can’t wait for next year’s event.
