Hi, i'm Sarah!

Whether it’s through the lens or social media strategy, I create meaningful content that resonates and tells your unique story. Let’s work together to bring your vision to life in a way that feels true and memorable.

The Arrival

October’s first weekend brought the kind of Northwoods weather you can’t plan for but always hope to get. Warm days, windy afternoons, and that familiar smell of fall rolling in.

Jay and I packed up the truck with the boat in tow and headed north for our invitation to stay at White Eagle Resort on Lake Vermilion. We wanted a weekend that mixed work and play. This Minnesota fishing resort turned out to be exactly that. It had modern comfort with a true up north feel.

The Stay: Eagle’s Nest Cabin

Just a few minutes outside of Cook, the gravel road into the resort winds through tall pines and opens into one of the most peaceful places we’ve stayed. White Eagle Resort is tucked into the west side of Lake Vermilion. It immediately slowed our pace. It was quiet, calm, and everything you hope for when you head north.

We stayed in The Eagle’s Nest, one of sixteen cabins on the property. It sits on its own stretch of shoreline with a wraparound deck, a lower overlook deck, and a private dock.

Inside, the cabin combines rustic charm with modern convenience. Two large loft-style rooms upstairs and two bedrooms below make it easy to host groups or families. The little details stood out to us. The full kitchen had high-end appliances. The dishwasher was quiet enough to run while we relaxed after dinner. The heat worked well, which was especially nice during the cool and windy fall nights. It’s the kind of setup that makes cooking together fun. Whether you’re grilling outside or prepping a meal indoors, nothing felt cramped.

Our mornings started with coffee at the table while we watched sunlight move across the lake. One night ended at the grill, with the smell of Johnsonvilles in the air and plenty of laughter. White Eagle Resort quickly felt like a home base for the perfect weekend.

Friday: Exploring the Lake

Once we unpacked, we launched the boat and headed for Black Bay. The wind was up and we marked fish, but our catches were small. We moved behind an island and found a downed tree holding perch and smallmouth. The bite was slow but steady. It was a relaxing way to start. Jay caught a solid smallie.

We fished off a few island points near the resort but couldn’t get anything to bite that we saw on Livescope.

As daylight faded, we docked the boat and drove up the road to The Landing. It’s a classic Northwoods bar just a mile away. Over two great burgers, we swapped stories with a local angler and snowmobile club member. The wall was covered in patches from law enforcement and sled clubs, which sparked our conversation.

He gave us some fishing tips and a few new spots to try in the morning. These kinds of encounters are what make northern Minnesota feel like home. “Minnesota Nice” is real, guys!

Saturday: Chasing Walleyes at the Narrows

The next morning, we followed his advice and headed to Wakemup Narrows. We tucked out of the wind and started marking fish right away.

The bite was slow but steady enough to keep us interested. Every walleye felt earned against the gusts pushing across the lake. There was a tournament going on, which added a little pressure. But we were just happy to be catching, even if they were small.

Tech Tools That Helped

We heavily relied on onX Fish to scout Area Insights, additional boat launches, offline mapping, hazards, weather, you name it. You can use code KOZ to save 20 percent on any OnX Fish subscription. It’s such a great resource for anglers and makes fish accessible whether from a boat, small craft, or the shoreline. We don’t have a Minnesota Lakemaster chip, so we used the Humminbird One-Boat app for detailed contour mapping as lake contours on OnX are not intended for navigation.

Almost every numbered spot we tried had fish on it. That afternoon, we found a mid-lake hump that held enough to keep us busy until sunset. The wind finally calmed down, and we cruised back to the dock on glass. Jay caught more fish than I did, which he still mentions. But the real win was figuring out new water together. Annnnnd I netted them, so that counts too!

It was one of those nights that makes you stop and take it all in. The next morning was a different story. Gusts had started overnight. We could hear the wind howling through the trees while we slept. By sunrise, it was blowing 25 miles per hour and whitecapping the lake.

Product Shoutout: Mission Outdoors Dread-Knot Dock Lines

Quick shoutout to Mission Outdoors. We were sent two of their Dread-Knot Dock Lines to test out, and they honestly impressed both of us.

Whether we kept the boat tight to the dock or let it float just off it, the lines held strong. Even in shifting wind, they kept everything secure without slamming into the dock. I’ll be the first to admit it – I can’t tie a rope to save my life. I was genuinely impressed. They’re incredibly user-friendly, even for someone like me who gets nervous every time I approach a cleat and require no knot-tying what-so-ever, but rather “Slide it. Leave it.” as they say. We love simplicity.

While these were sent to us free of charge, I would 10/10 spend my money on these to never have to tie a knot again on a dock cleat. Worth every penny to keep your boat secure and your peace of mind intact. Incredible product.

Around the Resort

When we weren’t on the water, we wandered the property. It’s clear White Eagle was built by people who love the outdoors.

The beach area was quiet during our visit, but it’s easy to picture families lounging here in summer. It has chairs, a volleyball net, and plenty of open space for games.

Closer to shore, we found a boat house with a self-serve bait station. The private ramp, individual docks, and spotless fish-cleaning house make it a great setup for boaters.

After long days on the water, we spotted two lakeside saunas tucked near the shoreline. They’re perfect for warming up while watching waves roll in. We hit one Sunday morning to refresh before packing up. Perhaps our favorite spot though was the Great Room; a hang out space with so many different games from table-tennis to shuffleboard, and our favorite, a fish-themed pinball machine. We played for hours on Saturday night post-dinner!

The Main Lodge and Departure

Before checking out, we stopped by the main lodge. It’s a cozy building filled with resort merch, lake maps, stickers, and that up-north spirit. It was the perfect last stop before we loaded up and headed out.

The Perfect Up North Reset

Sunday morning came too soon. The sky was thick with clouds. The wind was wild. The lake was churning. We took one last walk down to our little overlook dock, holding onto our hoods and coffee cups, soaking in the chaos before we packed up.

Even though this was technically a work trip, it didn’t feel like one. It felt like the kind of reset we didn’t know we needed – peaceful, grounding, and filled with the little moments that remind you why we love venturing north.

We left White Eagle Resort feeling rested, recharged, and already talking about when we could come back. From the thoughtful amenities to the care that comes with being family owned and operated (and having an incredible fishery at your fingertips) everything about this place feels intentional. It’s clear the family behind it truly cares about both the property and the guests who visit.

If you’re planning a trip to northern Minnesota and want that perfect mix of comfort, charm, and connection to the outdoors, this is exactly where you want to be. We’re already planning our next stay – and next time, we’re bringing friends (maybe even the dogs! They’re Pet-Friendly)!

Thank you Stephanie and Tom for the invite to your little slice of heaven on Lake Vermilion!
